Poker Glossary
Ace High A five card hand that contains an ace but no pair. This hand loses to any pair.
Action Is when the betting takes place.
Active Player Means that player is still able to win the pot unless the player is drawing dead.
Advertise To make a bluff and intentionally expose yourself as a lose player.
All-In When a player bets the rest of their checks.
Ante A bet needed to be made before the start of a hand. I.e. Big Blind and Small blind.
Bad Beat When a very strong hand is beaten by a weaker one. Also know as a "Suck Out."
Bank Roll The amount of money you have to wager.
Belly Buster A draw to fill an inside straight.
Bet For Value Betting to raise the pot amount when you know you have the best hand.
Bicycle The lowest possible straight A-2-3-4-5 also known as the "wheel."
Big Blind The minimum bet put in before the cards are dealt by the player sitting left of the small blind.
Big Slick In the Hold'em world Ace / King is know as "Big Slick."
Blank A card that comes off the deck that has no effect to anyones hand.
Blind Is the ante that one or two players must pay before any of the cards is dealt.
Blow Back To lose the profit that a player just won.
Bluff When a player raises with a hand that is most likely not the best one.
Board Is the five cards that are turned faced up in the middle of the table (the flop, the turn, the river).
Boat Another name for a full house also known as a "full-boat."
Bottom Pair When you use the lowest card on the board to make a pair.
Broadway The highest straight posible 10-J-Q-K-A.
Bullet Any Ace.
Bump A term used when a player raises the pot.
Burn This term is when the dealer deals off the top card face down before dealing out the hands to the players.
Bust worthless hand that has failed to improve with the cards on the board.
Bust a Player To eliminate a player by winning all their checks.
Bust Out To be eliminated (Busted).
Button A chip that identifies which player is in the "dealer" position.
Buy-In The amount of money needed to play in that particular game.
Call To match the person who raised the pot.
Caught Speeding Slang for being caught bluffing.
Check When a player is not to bet but to reserve the right to call or raise if another player bets.
Check Raise To check and raise in the same round of betting.
Cinch Hand an unbeatable hand also know as "The Nuts."
Come Hand A hand which is not made and requires one or more cards on the turn or river.
Commit Fully To put in as many chips as possible to play out that hand.
Connectors When a player receives consecutive cards which might end up making a straight.
Cowboy Slang for a king.
Crack To beat a strong hand.
Deuce is a two, the lowest valued card in poker.
Double Belly Buster A hand with two inside straight draws.
Double Through Going all-in to double your chip stack.
Drawing Dead Having a hand which no matter what cards are drawn you still lose.
Drop When a player decides to fold or lay down your cards.
Early Position A position where the player must act before most of the players at the table have done their action.
Equity The value of a hand or combination of cards.
Fifth Street When the fifth and final community card is laid down on the board also know as "The River."
Fill To get the card one is looking for to complete their hand.
Fish An inexperienced player who usually loses their money.
Fish Hook Slang for a Jack.
Flop The first three community cards which are flipped face up.
Flush When you have five cards all of the same suite.
Flush Draw Having four cards of the same suite and drawing for the fifth.
Fold To concede the hand giving up the pot.
Four of a Kind Having four of the same valued cards.
Fourth Street The forth community card to be flipped on the board and the third round of betting.
Free Card / Free Ride A card that a player gets without calling or placing a bet.
Freeze Out When all the players start with the same amount until one lone player has all the chips.
Full House When three cards in your hand are the same and the other two are the same.
G-Note A thousand dollar bill.
Get the Right Price The pot odds look good enough for you to call.
Get There To make your hand.
Give Action Betting, calling, raising or re-raising.
Gut Shot A card drawn to fill an inside straight.
Hand a players best five cards.
Heads-Up A game just between two players.
Hold'em A form of poker where players use five community cards combined with their two cards in their hand.
Hole This is the player’s hand which is concealed from the other players.
Home Run Hitter A player who makes big moves with the maximum amount of risk.
House The establishment or card room.
In Is when a player calls to remain in the hand.
In The Dark To bet or call without looking at your cards.
Inside Straight Four cards which require one in the middle to make the straight.
Jam To bet or raise the maximum.
Jammed Pot The maximum number of times a pot can be raised.
Keep Honest To call an opponent on the river even if his hand is better.
Key Card The one card that will make your hand.
Key Hand A hand that proves to change the path of a player for better or worse.
Kick-It slang for raising up the pot.
Late Position Is a place at the table where you act after most of the other players.
Lead To be the first to call after the hands are dealt out to the players.
Legitimate Hand A strong hand which is not considered a bluff.
Limit Poker Betting which is controlled for certain time periods.
Live Hand A hand that is still in the pot.
Lock A sure winning hand.
Look-Up To call the final bet after the river.
Loose Playing more hands than expected.
Loose Game When a lot of players are playing the same pots.
Main Pot When a player decides to go all in than he/she is entitled to only that pot if any other betting occurs after.
Make a Move Try a bluff.
Maniac A player who plays dangerous hands.
Mark An unskilled played targeted by the "sharks."
Meet To call a bet.
Middle Position This is a seat somewhere in the middle of betting.
Miss When you unable to get the card that you need on the river.
Monster A very strong hand.
Move-In When a player moves all of their chips in at one time.
Muck To laydown a hand without showing your cards.
Narrow The Feild To raise and hope to scare off your opponents with weaker hands.
Nit Wait for a strong hand.
No-Limit Means as much money as you currently have on the table can be bet at anytime.
Nut Flush The best available flush.
Nuts This is the best posible hand.
Off Suite Two cards of different suites.
On The Come When another card is needed to make your hand.
One Gap Inside straight.
Open Ended Straight When your holding four consecutive straight cards.
Open Card A card dealt face up or on the board.
Open Pair A pair on the board.
Out A card that would win you the hand if drawn.
Out Draw To draw a card on the board and improve your hand to win.
Out Run Out draw on the board.
Over Call To bet after a player has already called.
Paint Face cards.
Pair Two cards of the same value.
Pass To fold.
Pay Off To call even if your hand might not be the best.
Play Back To re-raise an opponent who has already raised.
Pocket The cards that you have and no one can see otherwise known as the hole.
Pocket Rockets Two aces in the hole.
Position This is where you are seated in relation to the dealer.
Post To bet and throw your chips in the pot.
Protect a Hand Means to bet high so no one will try to out draw you.
Protect Your Cards To make sure you don’t lose your cards by placing a chip on top of them so they are not accidentally mucked.
Provider A sucker who looses his money.
Push When someone wins the pot and the chips are moved to that person’s possession.
Put Down Fold your cards.
Quads Four of a kind.
Rag Off A river card that doesn’t help your hand.
Ragged Flop This is when the flop cards don’t help your hand at all.
Rags Low value cards or cards that don’t help your hand.
Rail This is the bench or side line of a poker table where the players decide on if they are going to play the hand or not.
Rail Bird Someone who only watches the game because they already lost their money.
Rainbow This is when a player's hand or the cards on the board have multiple different suites.
Raise To put more chips in the pot so the other players must do the same to continue to play.
Rank The value of a card.
Rap To check with a knock.
Read This is when a player is able to understand their opponents intentions or what value their cards might be.
Represent To bet your strong hand.
Re-Raise To put more chips in after someone has already raised you In turn making them put more chips in to continue to play.
Riffle To shuffle cards or play with chips.
River Is the last card to be flipped on the board. Also know as "Fifth Street."
Rock A person who plays a really tight game.
Rock Garden Is a table full of people who play really tight.
Roll To turn a card face up.
Rounder A pro who tries to play as many big games as he can.
Royal Flush Is a straight 10 to ace and all the cards are the same suit. This is the best possible hand in poker.
Run A straight or consecutive winning hands..
Run Over To play aggressive and try to control the players at the table.
Runner Runner When the turn and river (last two cards exposed on the board) make your hand.
Running Pair When the river makes a pair for your hand.
Rush When you are winning hands.
Sandbag When a player checks a strong hand only to raise or re-raise their opponent later in the game.
Satellite These are small tournaments which the winner gains access to larger tournaments.
Scare Card A card on the board that may intimidate some players.
Scoop To take the whole pot.
See Means to call in order to see another card on the board.
Semi-Bluff To bet with a hand that might turn into the best hand.
Set Is three cards of the same value in a hand Also know as "Trips."
Short Stacked To have a small amount of chips left on the table.
Showdown When all bets are placed and the players left flip their cards and watch as the rest of the board is revealed.
Side Card A card which can determine a winner between to closely valued hands.
Side Pot A new pot started for those who are still able to bet after a player has gone all in.
Slow Play Not to bet a strong hand right away hoping the opponent might raise.
Slow Roll To slowly show your cards in a showdown.
Small Blind Half the minimum bet that must be paid by the player sitting left of the dealer.
Smooth Call To call an opponents raise with a monster hand hopeing for that player to continue betting later.
Snap Off To beat out a bluffer with a good hand.
Speed The aggression level at which you play.
Splash Around To play an unexpected loose game.
Splash The Pot Throw your chips in the pot instead of placing them on the table in front of you.
Split Is when two players share a pot evenly.
Squeeze To slowly look at your pocket cards with lifting them off the table.
Stack A players chip pile.
Stay To remain by calling and not raising.
Steal This means to bluff late in the hand to try and win the pot by scaring your opponents.
Steaming Playing wild because of your emotions.
Steel Wheel Lowest straight flush possible ace to five.
Straight Five cards in a hand which are all in sequence.
Straight Flush When your hand is all the same suit and in sequence.
Suck Out To win a pot when your an underdog going in.
Sweat When a player watches another player from across the rail. This is done to try and pick up a read
Sweeten The Pot Slang for raising.
Table Cop A player who calls to keep others honest.
Table Stakes Means only the money on the table can be put into action.
Table Talk Any verbal discussion of the current hand being played at the table. Used to obtain a read by some players.
Tap City To go for broke.
Tap Out To go all in.
Tell An action of some sort that a player does that might reveal his hand.
Third Pair Getting a pair with the third highest valued card on the board.
Three of a Kind Three same valued cards in a players hand.
Tight A player who only plays strong hands.
To Go Amount needed to enter a pot.
Top Pair Highest card on the board makes a pair in your hand.
Trips or Triplets Three of a kind.
Turn Is the fourth card to be exposed on the board.
Two Pair When two cards in your hand have a matching valued card, leaving one card as the kicker.
Under-Raise To raise less than the raise from the previous bet.
Under The Gun First to act.
Underdog The hand least likely to win.
Up Card A card dealt face up.
Walk To be away from the table long enough to miss a hand.
Walkers Players who constantly walk.
Wheel Lowest straight possible ace to five.
Whipsaw To raise before a person in the middle position calls.
Wired Pair When a player has two cards of the same vale in the hole.
Worst Hand The lowest hand possible.
