World Series of Poker History

World Series of Poker 2005 was held at Harrah's Rio Suites, Las Vegas with the final 2 days of the Main event concluding in its traditional location, The Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas.

The WSOP is unequalled by any other poker event in the world today, and it is considered by all to be the ultimate achievement in any poker player's career to gain that coveted title of World Champion. This year, Joe Hachem beat the other 5,618 players to win the title and a record breaking $7.5 million for his buy-in stake of $10,000.

Poker is an old game that dates back to before the late17th century. It’s said that the French settlers in New Orleans were the first to play a game that involved betting and bluffing in the 1680’s. The official start of the World Series of Poker was in 1970 by Benny Binion at his Horseshoe Club. Benny had an idea of getting all the best poker players to play against each other in the public eye to determine which player was the best of all.

Born in 1904, Benny was a rolling stone in the plains of Texas living under the stars and playing poker with real life cowboys. After moving to Las Vegas in 1947 with his family, Benny was able to establish a couple of gambling clubs before opening the Benny Binion Horseshoe Club in 1951. The wealth that this man built was so well done that schools teach his business methods to their students. Today the little tournament that Benny started in the 1970’s is now the biggest Poker Tournament in the world. Almost every poker player dreams of winning a gold bracelet but there are only a few who even get the chance at the last table.

A couple of players have succeeded more than once which is a next to impossible task. Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth Jr. and Johnny Chan are the top contenders with Doyle and Phil up to nine each and Johnny not far behind. Each year the tournaments get bigger with more players trying their stuff at the game. In the past couple WSOP Hold’em events, new players have taken the throne so it’s hard to say who will win the next one. Maybe you could have your own miracle run for a gold braclet and World Series of Poker fame.
